The Two Big Lies

By all accounts, Victoria* was destined to succeed. She was smart, driven, and ready to resume her university studies. Then she found out she was pregnant.

With the father of her unborn child in tow, she came to the Pregnancy Resource Center for an ultrasound. When she saw the tiny heart beating on the screen, she stared at her child – unmoved and stone-faced.

But her boyfriend had a different reaction; when he saw the little arms and legs move, he sighed as if he felt an instant connection with his child.

“I still need an abortion,” the young mother blurted out to shatter her boyfriend’s brief moment of joy. “I have my life planned and this pregnancy doesn’t fit.”

He didn’t say a thing; he just looked down. Then they both left.

“What a tragedy!” the ultrasound tech thought. “I know he wants that baby. Why didn’t he do something?”

Men are often led to believe that when it comes to their unborn children, what they think doesn’t matter. It’s as if a man’s opinion is automatically rendered irrelevant on the matter of whether his own child should live or not.

What a tragedy, indeed! This story illustrates two big lies fostered by our culture. First, young women today are being sold the lie that motherhood is somehow not a mark of success and that raising a child is not as important as her career. Second, men are often led to believe that when it comes to their unborn children, what they think doesn’t matter. It’s as if a man’s opinion is automatically rendered irrelevant on the matter of whether his own child should live or not.

But there is hope!

When Victoria didn’t arrive at her next appointment, we all thought Victoria had gone ahead with her abortion. But one day a phone call showed us how wrong we were.

“We decided to keep the baby,” Victoria told a PRC nurse. “I’m taking a year off school.”

Victoria’s boyfriend did not remain silent! He defended his young child. And judging from Victoria’s change of heart, he did it in such a way that she knew she had his love and support. And through your prayers and financial support, she had the love and support of the Pregnancy Resource Center.

With your partnership, we will continue to walk alongside women like Victoria, giving them truth and hope.
